Procedure PReparations

Prepare for your appointment at Silicon Valley Pain Center.

Dr. Chakerian often utilizes medication to alleviate anxiety and pain during procedures that take place at the surgery center (this is optional in most cases).

If you are going to be receiving sedative medication for your procedure:

  • Arrive with an empty stomach (fasting for at least 8 hours before your scheduled procedure)
  • Arrange to have a driver to take you home (this cannot be a taxi or Uber driver, because the person needs to be able to accompany you into your home and get you settled.)

For most procedures, in order to minimize the risk of bleeding and nerve damage:

  • Avoid the use of aspirin or aspirin-containing products (such as Excedrin) for 7 days before your scheduled procedure. You may take your regularly scheduled medications with a sip of water, except as noted below:
    • Avoid the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen (Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn) for 24 hours prior to your scheduled procedure.
    • Stop prescription blood-thinners (anticoagulants) ONLY if approved by Dr. Chakerian and your prescribing doctor. If this is the case, you will be advised exactly how and when to do this and whether or not you will need to use another medication in the meantime for safety purposes.
